GOL Parent Educator Receives CLC Certification Scholarship09-Aug-2017
Kudos go to Gift of Life Parent Educator Ashley Edwards, who has received a scholarship from the Division of Healthy Start Perinatal Services Epic Center to receive training to become a Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC). CLC® certification identifies a professional in lactation counseling who has demonstrated the necessary skills, knowledge, and attitudes to provide breastfeeding counseling and management support to families who are considering breastfeeding or who have questions or problems during the course of breastfeeding/lactation.
Ashley said she is excited about this opportunity to help new moms. "I know a lot of moms are nervous or unsure about breastfeeding. I can be a resource to our clients by going into their homes to support them once they are discharged from the hospital, and also help them address any challenges that might arise." she said.
All Gift of Life programs encourage breastfeeding, which provides the ideal nutrition for infants. In addition, the physical closeness, skin-to-skin touching, and eye contact all help mom and baby bond. Breastfed infants are also more likely to gain the right amount of weight as they grow rather than become overweight children. The AAP says breastfeeding also plays a role in the prevention of SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome).
